Agnews Developmental Center

Agnews Developmental Center (ADC) has been serving people with mental and developmental disabilities since 1888 and is the oldest of five state developmental centers currently operating in California.  Administered by the Department of Developmental Services and licensed by the Department of Health Services, Agnews occupies 87 acres in the heart of the Silicon Valley, located in San Jose on Zanker Road between Highway 237 and the Montague Expressway.  Agnews has become an exceptional home and workplace for 400 residents and 1200 staff.

ADC provides three levels of licensed care.  Acute, Skilled Nursing, and Intermediate Care for persons who need 24-hour health care, supervision, a structured environment, and habilitation programming.  Staff provide training at home and in the community in domestic, vocational, leisure, academic, communication, mobility,   and socialization skills.  Agnews promotes all aspects of growth and development, with emphasis on citizenship, advocacy, rights, decision-making, and independence.  This is done by the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), which includes the resident, the family or legal representative, and ADC staff, including a Physician, a Psychologist, Nurses, Psychiatric Technicians, an Individual Program Coordinator (IPC), a Social Worker, Health Services Specialists, Dietician, a Rehabilitation Therapist, an Occupational Therapist, a Speech Therapist, Teachers, Pharmacists, and Foster Grandparents.

Our 115 years of dedicated service and increased awareness for the needs of people with developmental disabilities makes ADC an invaluable community resource.  We look forward to an ever-increasing and essential roles to building partnerships with the people who live at Agnews, their parents and families, the Area Board, the Regional Centers and our community.
